Let's stand up on World Habitat Day and let it be known that affordable, adequate housing should be a priority everywhere—in our communities, in our towns, in our country, in our world.

News Facts

The United Nations has designated the first Monday each October as
World Habitat Day.
This year on Oct. 5 in Washington, D.C. and around the world, please join Habitat for Humanity in support of this global observance as we come together and declare that the lack of decent, affordable housing is unacceptable.

According to the United Nations, more than 100 million people in the world today are homeless. Millions more face a severe housing problem living without adequate sanitation, with irregular or no electricity supply and without adequate security.

Worldwide, more than 2 million housing units per year are needed for the next 50 years
to solve the present worldwide housing crisis. With our global population expanding,
however, at the end of those 50 years, there would still be a need for another 1 billion
houses. (UN-HABITAT: 2005)Raising awareness and advocating for change are the first
steps toward transformingsystems that perpetuate the global plague of poverty housing.
World Habitat Day serves as an important reminder that everyone must unite to ensure that
everyone has a safe,decent place to call home. The U.N. further states that both
developed and developing countries, cities and towns are increasingly feeling the effects of climate change, resource depletion, food insecurity, population growth and economic instability.
Rapid rates of urbanization cause serious negative consequences - overcrowding,
poverty, slums with many poorly equipped to meet the service demands of ever growing
urban populations.With over half of the world’s population currently living in urban areas
the U.N. believes there is no doubt that the "urban agenda" will increasingly become a
priority for governments, local authorities and their non-governmental partners everywhere.

U.S. Housing Facts
About 95 million people, one third of the nation, have housing problems including a
high-cost burden,
overcrowding, poor quality shelter and homelessness.
(National Low Income Housing Coalition: 2004)

One in three American households spend more than 30 percent of income on housing,
and one in seven
spends more than 50 percent. (Joint Center for Housing Studies:
2006)

The number of low-income families that lack safe and affordable housing is related to
the number
of children that suffer from asthma, viral infections, anemia, stunted
growth and other health problems.
About 21,000 children have stunted growth
attributable to the lack of stable housing; 10,000 children
between the ages of 4 and 9 are hospitalized for asthma attacks each year because
of cockroach
infestation at home; and more than 180 children die each year in
house fires attributable to faulty
electrical heating and electrical equipment. (Sandel, et al: 1999)

Global poverty facts
By the year 2030, an additional 3 billion people, about 40 percent of the world’s population, will
need access to housing. This translates into a demand for 96,150 new affordable units every
day and 4,000 every hour. (UN-HABITAT: 2005)
One out of every three city dwellers – nearly a billion people – lives in a slum. (Slum indicators include:
lack of water, lack of sanitation, overcrowding, non-durable structures and insecure tenure.)
(UN-HABITAT: 2006)
UN-Habitat has reported that because of poor living conditions, women living in slums are more likely
to contract HIV/AIDS than their rural counterparts, and children in slums are more likely to die from
water-borne and respiratory illness. (UN-HABITAT: 2006)

Housing formation generates non-housing related expenditures that help drive the economy.
(Kissick, et al: 2006)

Investing in housing expands the local tax base. (Kissick, et al: 2006)

The theme for World Habitat Day 2009 is "Planning our Urban Future"
Celebrations of World Habitat Day in Washington, D.C. will be an excellent opportunity to foster global
discussion and raise the profile of shelter and urban issues at the national and international level.
Events in the United States and around the world include policy forums, award presentations,
luncheons, dinners, house-building and exhibitions

What can you do for World Habitat Day?

Advocate - Educate - Donate

ADVOCATE for decent housing for all by submitting a photo of yourself holding a sign that says “It all starts at home”
and submit it to Habitat’s photo petition on Flickr.com Habitat’s goal is to collect a minimum of 500 photos to

deliver to the White House. Submit your photo by Friday, September 25, 2009.

Today, 1 billion people live in slums, and that number is growing
rapidly. The U.S. can be a leader in the fight to help reduce global
poverty and improve the lives of people living in slums. Urge your
support the Shelter, Land and Urban Assistance Act of 2009.
Tell Congress to pass the SLUM Assistance Act!

EDUCATE

your community with Habitat for Humanity’s World Habitat Day handbook to learn
more about the importance of secure tenure and neighborhood
revitalization. Get even more information about the issue of insecure
tenure by reading Habitat’s Shelter Report: building a
securefuture through effective land policies.

Brainstorm ways to get more people involved. Learn from the
successes of last year’s campaign, and come up with
brand-new
ways to celebrate and publicize the important work of
Habitat forHumanity.

Take a virtual tour of the Capotillo informal settlement in the Dominican

A look back: 2008 World Habitat Day successes

Online advocates of Habitat for Humanity sent nearly 6,000 letters to U.S. presidential candidates John McCain
and Barack Obama, urging them to make housing a priority in their prospective administrations. Habitat Canada
sent a similar letter to Canadian candidates for prime minister.

Affiliates across the United States sponsored special wall-raisings; appeared on radio, TV and public education
programs; hosted volunteer appreciation and recruitment events; issued World Habitat Day proclamations;
and served potluck dinners and pancake breakfasts, among many other activities.

Habitat for Humanity Guatemala engaged government officials in conversations about poverty housing and
also facilitated several advocacy training workshops.

Habitat’s Europe/Central Asia area office organized, planned and hosted an intensive social housing
conference focused on the global state of human habitat. Sixty academics, NGO leaders and government
officials took part.

Habitat for Humanity South Korea hosted a two-day event that included a disaster simulation for 450 participants
and a Euro-Asian Philharmonic Orchestra Concert attended by 3,000 people.
Habitat for Humanity New Zealand held a nationwide online photography competition.

Habitat for Humanity Kenya exhibited Habitat’s work at the World Habitat Day celebration hosted by the Kenyan’s
Ministry of Housing/UN-HABITAT.

Today the kids and I met the Electricians Dave Ryan and Dave Ryan Jr. at the house they did a lot of work completely wired up the rest of the house, did a lot of work in the basement. Great Job guys! That was a lot of work. Thank you for taking care of getting the power hooked up later that week. These guys are amazing at the house for 8:00 on Saturdays to volunteer. They have spent a lot of time on this house.

I went up to the house today to do some painting and clean up. I would not have been able to do this if it wasn't for Suzanne Kingston and Howard LaBillois for taking such great care of my children for me.
I just want to say Thank you to them for being such great neighbours, friends and support to my children and I. Suzanne came over to help with the painting as well. It was nice to have the company. I also want to mention that Suzanne and Howard have been sending out letters to others whom may also like to help. Thank you so much for all you have done for us.
My good friend Cindy Caissey-Vautour came over to help with the house today as well. Thanks to her we can now see our floor, and out our windows. Thank you for being such a great friend. We even had a visit from her husband Denny and daughter Marlyanna thanks for stopping by, just a visit from friends and family helps me to keep a positive attitude and makes the work seem that much easier and more fun.

The Board of Directors for Habitat for Humanity Saint John Region Inc. presented the children and I with a

Tool Box Which will be very useful in helping me maintain our home. Which is what Jean Boudreau and Habitat for Humanity has taught me.

Bible which is needed by every family. This will help me to raise my children as positive contributors to society and to teach them right from wrong, good from bad.

Candle - so you will always know the warmth of family and friends in your new home.

Atlantic Wall Board gave us a Turkey and a beautiful homemade cutting board. We will enjoy the turkey. The cutting board I am sure will last many life time. Thank you this is very thoughtful!

Another great gift we recieved from Don Connolly is a Homeowners Manual which I am certain will come in handy. Thank you so much!

Getting ready for Christmas

Today after we got done at the dedication ceremony Heather Myers from Xerox came to help me with everything I had neglected to do for Christmas at my apt. We bought a tree, decorated it and brought up all the decorations from the storage closet and decorated for Christmas. In order to put the tree and decorations up we had to move some stuff around. We put all the boxes and some dressers in my daughters room to make room for Christmas, When we were finished it looked amazing. Thank you so much I couldn't have done it without you both. I had a ball doing it. The kids were so happy when they got home. They had a great time decorating the tree.

Saint John the Baptist / King Edward School

Today the children teachers at Saint John the Baptist / King Edward School had their annual Christmas concert. It was a pleasure to attend this beautiful event.

The School was given a $100.00 Irving Gas Card and they wanted to sell tickets for this ticket at the door of the concert and have the proceeds donated to Habitat for Humanity Saint John.

For this fund raiser they were able to raise $152.00.

We now have a KITCHEN!!!

We received our kitchen today. Roland was very nice to come at the end of the day to put it together. It is beautiful. Thank you so much Kent's Building Supplies for this amazing donation. It is wonderful and we are going to enjoy it everyday. It has many large cupboards and drawers. This will help eliminate the stress of everything falling out of the cupboards and having to put it on the counter. One cupboard was not sent so, I will add a picture tomorrow.

Hello everyone,

I want to thank all the many volunteers whom so generously gave of their time to help my family and I in one of the most important times in our lives. This all would not be possible without you all working together to give us this wonderful opportunity for a better future. My heart fills with Joy as I look back through the pictures of all the wonderful people that were there for us in this time of need. I am putting out a call for action as there are still many things unfinished at the house and the dedication ceremony is 2 weeks away and Christmas 2 days after. My family and I really wanted to be in our house for Christmas. I know how busy everyone is this time of year and if you do have any extra time it would be greatly appreciated. Many, Whom have volunteered in the past have come back to give more help. Thank you so much. Even an hr or two is a great help and means so much to my family. Crack Fill Dust!!

When walking into the house this evening everything was covered in white dust. The crack fill and sanding was done. Now to clean up the mess. I was so glad that I had my two good friends Angela Ross and Sonya St.Coeur there to help with this dusty task. It was a lot of work we still managed to have a lot of fun though. We had some members of the board for Habitat for Humanity come out and finish up the work that needed to be done before the crack fillers come out on Saturday. Terrific Job! We are now ready to get some crack fill.

To the left is Dave Delaney He is the Director of Operations at the Habitat for Humanity Restore. He works full time at the Restore and helps out with everything else when he has the time. Thank you for everything you have been terrific!

To the right is my good friend Sabrina Thompson. She has been my mentor through this journey. She has been there and done so much for us, I wouldn't have gotten this far if it it wasn't for her. Thank you Sabrina, You have been a phenomenal friend and amazing mentor since even before I submitted my application for the Habitat house.

Today we had a celebration for the build of the 11th house by Habitat for Humanity here in Saint John. It was a beautiful ceremony with wonderful speeches. I would like to thank everyone for attending and for everything you did today. I am trying to find a way to add the speeches to this Blog, they are too long. I also want to thank Chateau de Champlain for providing hot chocolate and huge rice crispy squares for everyone to enjoy during the ceremony. The following is a very nice write up in Saturday's Telegraph Journal about the ceremony.

SAINT JOHN - The sentimental classic I'll Be Home for Christmas is sure to have special meaning to single mom Andrea Galbraith and her two children, Scott, 7, and Kristyanna, 6, this year.

That's because the Galbraiths, chosen last spring as the recipients of Habitat for Humanity Saint John Region's 11th build, expect to be in their new digs on St. Andrews Street in the city's south end in plenty of time to celebrate the holiday season.
"Not in my wildest dreams did I ever think I would own my own home," said Galbraith, 35, as she and her children waited for Habitat's Friday noon-hour 'Celebrate the Build' ceremony in front of their impressive, but unfinished future home.
"We're hoping to be in our home for Christmas," said Galbraith, who currently lives in subsidized apartment housing in the city's north end.
"This is an amazing opportunity," she added. "It means we're going to have a healthy, safe home. I'm going to be able to provide a stable environment for my children to grow up in, and learn and become good contributors to society. Not in my wildest dreams did I ever think I would own a home."
Scott and Kristyanna, whom she enrolled in nearby St. John the Baptist-King Edward School in September, also seem to be fully aware of the impact home ownership will have on their lives.
Galbraith told friends, neighbours, politicians and Habitat sponsors and volunteers who gathered for the ceremony that Scott, in a Thanksgiving assignment, said he was thankful the "big, big, big house and big yard" his family would be getting. And asked what having a new home means, Kristyanna told a reporter, "It means a better life."
Friend Sabrina Thompson, a part of Galbraith's project support network, thanked Habitat for giving Galbraith a hand up and not a handout, as Habitat describes its international work in alleviating poverty housing.
"I can't think of more deserving person," she said.
She spoke of how, in making application to become a Habitat recipient, Galbraith wrote: "I want a yard for kids to play in. I want to give them a chance at a better future."
As part of the 500 hours of sweat equity Galbraith is required to put into the new home, as a recipient, she has established a data base of future suppliers to Habitat projects and decided to become a "lifelong" Habitat volunteer.
Habitat's treasurer, Ray Littlewood, chaired Friday's ceremony, while its secretary, Jeannie Richard, made the symbolic gift of a hammer to Galbraith, telling Scott his mother would use it to hang up family photos and the awards he and his sister collected at school.
Coun. Donnie Snook prayed a blessing over the home and the Galbraith family, while Jack Keir spoke of how he gladly found land for the build when, in his role as supply and services minister, he was contacted by Habitat president Tim Ryan.
"It fits not only into what we want as supply and services, but also, as minister of energy, this fits very well with our Benefits Blueprint plan in terms of housing for those folks who need it most," Keir said.

We are now into our second week with Xerox and just looking at the pictures you can see the amazing job they have accoplished in one week. A lot of things get done everyday that you cant even see in the pictures. This morning we started the day scraping the frost off our windows. It was cold and even more so for the workers who are still working on Framing the outside of the house and roof. Thank you to Starbucks for providing us with unlimited coffee for the day. This defenitly helped to warm the workers up. Non the less everyone still had a great day. Lots of Laughing work and fun.

We had our first group of Volunteers come out today for our Rent a Day Fund Raiser. It was a group of wonderful people from the management team at Xerox.

I greeted the workers as they arrived on site they seemed anxious to get started. I left them to do their work. As I arrived around 3:30 to see the progress and get some footage from the day, I was amazed at the amount of work they were able to accomplished in such a short time. Of course, I am sure it was a long 6hrs for them. They did a lot of shovelling and heavy work finished the basement floor. I wish I would have been there to get some footage of that, I was told everyone was covered in dirt. Then they put the basement ceiling up, so we have a floor on the second level. I know there is a lot more to it however, as I am sure you can all tell. I have absolutely no knowledge of building a home. It looks wonderful. As I brought the kids up at the end of the day they let out a loud “WOW” They were surprised to see all the people working on building a home for us to live in. I want you all to know how much we appreciate your hard work today. I hope you all were able to go home and take a long hot bath and relax.

Today they made the forms for the cement foundation walls.

This morning Gary Mittelholtz from CBC News interviewed Tim Ryan (chairman of the board), John Ives Boudreau (Project manager), My son Scott, daughter Kristyanna and myself in front of the Build Site at 17 Saint Andrews Street. This was very exciting for the children and I.

The Footing is finished today.

We Broke Ground Today!!

Today was an amazing day. We broke ground. Finally!! I couldn’t be happier. The children and I went to the site to see the progress, as we will at the end of each day. We got so excited to see that this is really happening. I have never been so excited to see a hole in the mud. Lol Children don’t fully understand something like this until they see it happen with their own eyes. (To tell you the truth I didn’t believe it myself until today.) Today, we start to believe.
Yesterday it was just a dream and today that dream has become a reality for the children and Myself. The first day is finally here.

We would like to know if you would be interested in forming a team with your company to attend an all day build session at the proposed 2008 development site. We will provide all the safety training, supervisions, tools and materials to complete the work, as well as coffee and lunch!

YOUR ORGANIZATION can make a difference in this year’s build either it be by framing, painting, sweeping, or serving refreshments. A Saint John family needs your support.
